Warm monsoon rain drummed against the carved cedar shutters of the Gulberg estate, filling the marble courtyard with the intoxicating perfume of wet earth and night-blooming jasmine. Upstairs, the house was hushed; Dr. Shehryar had been summoned to a late consultation across Lahore, leaving only the amber glow of brass lanterns reflecting across the rain-slicked flagstones.

Standing before the arched mirror in a sheer mulberry silk robe, Leila traced the delicate gold chain resting against her collarbone. Every distant roll of thunder seemed to echo the restlessness that had been building inside her for weeks—an unspoken hunger for a touch that did not ask for permission.

Below the balcony, the private garden gate clicked softly. A tall silhouette stepped beneath the colonnade, shaking the rain from his dark coat before his gaze lifted directly toward her parted silk curtains.

Cool mist brushed Leila’s bare ankles as she stepped onto the upper veranda, the sheer silk of her robe clinging to the curve of her waist. Below, Zayd halted at the foot of the exterior stone staircase, rain glistening along his jawline as his eyes held hers with electric intensity.

Neither of them spoke as he ascended the steps two at a time, stopping only when the warmth of his breath grazed her temple. His fingers brushed the damp edge of her sleeve, lingered at her wrist, and felt the rapid, unmistakable flutter of her pulse.

Inside the doorway, the candlelit alcove flickered in the draft. One step backward would draw him into her private chamber; one whispered word right here against the marble balustrade would shatter every rule they had pretended to keep.

Ruby-colored cardamom wine swirled inside two cut-crystal goblets as Leila dimmed the wall sconces, leaving only a cluster of beeswax candles burning on the low rosewood table. When the parlor door opened, Zayd paused on the threshold, taking in the deliberate intimacy of the room.

He crossed the Persian carpet without a sound, the scent of rain, cedarwood, and warm skin surrounding her before he even touched the glass she offered. Instead of taking the goblet, his fingers closed gently over hers, guiding the rim to her own lips first.

The silence between them hummed with anticipation as he set both glasses aside. His thumb traced the embroidered gold border of her dupatta, waiting for her signal to cross the final threshold.

The silk slipped from Leila’s shoulder as his name left her lips—softer than the rain, yet louder than any confession she had ever dared to speak. Zayd’s hands framed her waist, lifting her effortlessly against the cool marble pillar as his mouth claimed hers in a slow, breathless kiss.

Every hesitation dissolved into the warm monsoon mist. The contrast of rainwater and feverish skin sent shivers cascading down her spine as he murmured the truth he had hidden for months against the hollow of her throat.

By the time the storm began to ebb over Lahore’s rooftops, the secret between them had become an unbreakable pact—and the night was only beginning.

Heavy velvet curtains fell shut behind them, sealing out the storm and wrapping the alcove in amber shadows. Zayd’s fingers tangled in the loose waves of Leila’s hair, tilting her chin up until her breath caught and the last trace of restraint vanished.

Silk parted against silk as they sank onto the cushioned divan, the fragrance of jasmine and cardamom hanging thick in the candlelit air. Every touch was unhurried, deliberate, and devastatingly intimate.

In the quiet sanctuary of the locked parlor, Leila discovered that true freedom wasn’t found in escaping the walls of Gulberg—but in choosing who she invited inside them.

When Leila guided his palm beneath the gold-threaded dupatta, Zayd’s breath stilled against her cheek. His fingers traced the curve of her spine with reverence and heat, drawing her flush against his chest until their heartbeats synchronized.

No words were needed in the amber hush of the parlor. Each lingering kiss along her collarbone was a promise of clandestine midnights yet to come—a secret language spoken only when the gates of Lahore were bolted.

As dawn approached in the distance, he left a single brass key resting on her vanity—an invitation to the chapters that awaited her next.

Behind the carved cedar doors of the upper gallery, oil portraits and velvet divans lay bathed in crimson lantern light where high-society restraint dissolves into uncensored passion.
